The Boeing Poseidon MRA1 restored fixed-wing maritime patrol capability to the Royal Air Force after a significant gap and has become one of the clearest signs of the RAF's renewed attention to maritime surveillance and anti-submarine warfare. Based on the Boeing 737 airframe but adapted for military use, it represents the modern form of a role once associated with aircraft such as the Sunderland, Shackleton and Nimrod.
Its importance lies not only in replacing a lost capability. The Poseidon reflects the return of maritime patrol to strategic importance in British defence thinking at a time when submarine activity, North Atlantic security and alliance surveillance have once again become central concerns.
The retirement of Nimrod left Britain without a dedicated fixed-wing maritime patrol aircraft for a period, and that absence became increasingly conspicuous.
