Keith Park: The RAF Commander Who Defended Britain and Malta

Thirty feet beneath the lawns of a country house near Uxbridge, Air Vice-Marshal Keith Park watches every squadron marker on his ops room map slide into the “engaged” column while Winston Churchill looks on from the back of the gallery. Churchill asks what reserves remain. Park has one word for him: none.

This episode matters because Park’s operational judgment, not just the pilots who flew under him, decided whether Fighter Command’s most heavily attacked group held together during the Battle of Britain, and the same instincts he brought to No. 11 Group later helped turn around the siege of Malta.

In this episode:

  • Park’s path from a wounded New Zealand gunner to decorated fighter pilot and Hugh Dowding’s key staff officer at Fighter Command
  • His command of No. 11 Group, covering London and the southeast at the height of the Battle of Britain
  • The bitter “Big Wing” dispute with Trafford Leigh-Mallory and Douglas Bader over how fighters should be massed to fight
  • His removal from command soon after the battle, and his second campaign defending besieged Malta in 1942

Listen if you’re interested in:

  • Battle of Britain command decisions and Fighter Command’s radar-based defence system
  • The Big Wing controversy and the politics behind Dowding and Park’s removal
  • The siege of Malta and the Pedestal convoy
  • RAF commanders whose contributions are still argued over rather than widely celebrated
